Where Nordic heritage meets modern shipping

M / S Aurora Botnia is a combined freight and passenger ferry (ro-pax) delivered in 2021 and will operate the Umeå-Vaasa route. Umeå and Vaasa's joint shipping company NLC Ferry ordered the ferry from Rauma Marine Constructions in January 2019 to replace the previous ferry M/S Wasa Express. Aurora Botnia was scheduled to start operating the route in May 2021, but due to the Covid-19 pandemic, delivery of the ferry was delayed until August 25, 2021.

The company markets Aurora Botnia as the world's most environmentally friendly passenger ferry. Four multifuel Wärtsilä engines power the ferry that can run on natural gas (LNG), biogas and battery operation on arrival and departure at the port. Compared to the old ferry, the travel time on the route is shortened by one hour and is now done in 3.5 hours.

The name of the ferry comes from the ferry Eos, which operated Obbola-Holmsund before the Obbola bridge was built. The equivalent of Roman mythology to the Eos of Greek mythology is Aurora and Botnia for the area where the ferry goes.
